DSR community planners therefore prioritize the visibility of stars via thoughtful placement and design of artificial light sources plus light shields such as trees which reduce upward light spill, preserving the integrity of the night sky vista
The limitations placed on artificial light and the planting of natural light shields consequentially preserve nocturnal landscapes and so conserve the natural habitats of local flora and fauna

Why is atmospheric CO2 emission removal research VITAL?

You likely know most (or even all) of this already, but just in case and because knowledge is power when it leads to action…

….The continued success of planet Earth’s ability to nurture life relies on balanced ‘greenhouse’ gases  (the protective bubble of atmospheric gases within which our planet circles the Sun.)  

Carbon dioxide (co2) is the most important of all the gases that work together to create Earth’s ‘greenhouse’ bubble, as it absorbs heat radiating from the planet’s surface and conveys it back again.  Without carbon dioxide, our greenhouse bubble would be too weak to keep the average global temperature above freezing (brr!)  

But more carbon dioxide is NOT better. Its just more – in fact any ‘more’ is too much, toppling the optimal natural balance of gases (achieved long before mankind made it here and) fundamentally required for sustaining life on our planet. Why? Because ‘more’ supercharges the greenhouse effect, radiating MORE heat back to the planet’s surface. The result of artificially supercharging the natural greenhouse effect? Earth’s surface temperature changes and sadly for mankind, life on Earth didn’t slowly evolve over the millennia to thrive in unnaturally climbing temperatures. And can’t now evolve quickly enough to sustain survival – even ours.  

Here’s Earth’s history in a 1-10 

Within the safety of its protective greenhouse ‘bubble’, planet Earth nurtured the evolution of carbon-based life-forms.  
In order to maintain an optimal ‘life-support’ balance between the gases that made up its protective bubble, Earth had to figure out what to do with the (excess) carbon left behind when these life-forms died.   
Earth devised a practical storage solution – slowly burying and trapping this (excess) carbon deep within its own self.  
Many years passed and some of Earth’s first simple carbon life-forms gradually evolved into human beings.   
Human beings uncovered the (excess) carbon that Earth had so prudently hidden 
Thus discovering fossil ‘fuels’  - a ‘free’ and natural product that produced power when burned 
So they dug most of it up and burned it – releasing all that carefully curated (excess) carbon into Earth’s atmosphere 
The massive influx of carbon toppled the balance between the gases that made up Earth’s protective ‘life-support’ bubble 
Earth’s life-supporting bubble began to fail and so life on Earth began to fail to thrive

Human beings found a way remove the excess carbon from Earth’s atmosphere and repaid their ‘carbon debt’ to Planet Earth.  Optimal balance of the gases that formed Earth’s protective bubble was resumed – life survived.

Or at least, that’s the way we ALL hope the story ends…  

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) – essentially reversing the effects of burning fossil fuels by collecting and removing the (excess!) co2 from the atmosphere – is a tricky business and development of the necessary technology is well behind where it urgently needs to be.   

Planting trees and other current efforts to counteract or reduce mankind’s ongoing co2 emissions help negate what we’re doing now – but sadly NOT what we’ve already done.  

Removing the past ‘backlog’ of carbon emissions from Earth’s atmosphere and oceans isn’t just important, it’s the ONLY potential pathway to achieving a sustainable future for life on our planet.

As a global community, we KNOW we need to rectify past mistakes – the problem is we don’t know how to.

There are lots of bright humans across the globe working hard to develop clever solutions. But they need help from the rest of us.  They need money – lots of it – to turn their bright ideas into reality.
